Making Waves: Meta’s Crackdown, X Shake-Up, F1 Brand Collabs + More
Welcome to Making Waves, our monthly round-up of marketing trends and platform updates shaping the world of brand, content and digital. From Meta’s crackdown on unoriginal content to Aston Martin’s cultural crossover in F1. Whether you’re a brand leader, digital strategist or content lead, these are the shifts worth knowing about.
1. Meta cracks down on unoriginal content
Meta has gone after copy-paste culture, removing half a million spam accounts and over 10 million impersonators in the first half of the year. Facebook is also deprioritising recycled or AI-generated content in its algorithm.
This move follows ongoing criticism over feed quality and misinformation. It’s part of Meta’s push to bring creators back into focus and reward content that’s truly engaging and original.
Why it matters: Brands will need to stay sharp, credible, and original if they want their organic posts to land. Lazy recycling or AI fluff won’t cut it. A strong content marketing strategy is more essential than ever.
2. Aston Martin leans into lifestyle
Ahead of Silverstone, F1 team Aston Martin Aramco partnered with beauty and wellness brands. Glaize created green nail wraps matching team colours, Elemis hosted spa pop-ups, and matcha tastings were held in the I/AM fan community lounge.
Recent data puts women at 41% of F1’s global fanbase, up from around 32% in 2017 – a significant demographic shift fuelling sport-wide engagement. Their strategy blends cultural relevance with commercial foresight.
Why it matters: It’s a savvy play for brand engagement, showing how experiential marketing can evolve beyond the obvious. A strong case study in how campaigns and brand partnerships can open up new audience segments.
Aston Martin goes glam. Ahead of the British Grand Prix, Aston Martin Aramco teamed up with beauty brands to win over more female fans.
3. X (formerly Twitter) loses its CEO
Linda Yaccarino’s sudden exit from X has reignited speculation over the platform’s future. Her departure, combined with a history of turmoil, suggests more volatility ahead.
In the last 18 months, X has seen mass layoffs, a rebrand, advertiser departures, and controversial moderation choices. Yaccarino was brought in to steady the ship. Her departure sends the opposite signal.
Why it matters: Marketers should treat the platform with caution for now. Don’t over-invest until there’s clarity on leadership and direction. A flexible social media strategy will be key in the months ahead.
4. Definitely maybe the best merch play of the year
Oasis’ long-rumoured reunion tour finally landed, and so did the merchandise – official and unofficial. Adidas collabs, vintage reprints, Lidl interpretations, and eco-led fashion drops have exploded across the internet and British high street (yes, it’s still a thing).
The campaign has been credited with injecting an estimated £1billion into the UK’s economy. Even niche fan gear (branded cutlery?) has seen sell-out success.
Why it matters: This is nostalgia with commercial bite. When timing, culture and relevance align, it drives real-world results. The merch drop isn’t just hype – it’s a masterclass in cultural marketing and brand experience.

5. Podcast ad budgets hit new heights
A recent survey suggests that 78% of agencies and advertisers are actively running podcast campaigns – up from just 10% in 2015. It’s the strongest investment in audio we’ve seen yet. Whether it’s brand storytelling, host-read native spots or dynamic audio placements, podcasting offers a rare mix of scale and intimacy. And with better targeting and measurement, the format is maturing fast.
Why it matters: Podcasts are no longer niche. If you’re not building strategies around this format, it’s highly likely you should be. There’s real value in meeting audiences where they’re most focused; especially in your integrated media mix.
