Breaking away from the B2B marketing blueprint
In the increasingly challenging world of B2B marketing, the landscape is evolving quicker than some are ready to accept. As businesses continue to navigate the challenges of reduced budgets and higher expectations, the conventional B2B “blueprint” is showing signs of major wear and tear (and diminishing returns).
Traditional product-focused content marketing, once the stalwart of B2B marketing strategies, is no longer enough to win the hearts and minds of your modern decision-makers.
Campaigns based solely around long-form written content, targeted only at the C-suite, distributed uncreatively on LinkedIn and via content syndication, with one-touch contacts being passed to Sales as ‘leads’ – are not as effective as they once seemed.
It’s time for a paradigm shift. A monumental one in my opinion.
TL;DR
Breaking away from the B2B marketing blueprint is not about disregarding proven strategies, but rather about evolving and adapting to what customers expect from us today. To do that, you must:
- Go deeper to truly understand your audiences and their world.
- Invest in brand, positioning, and identity.
- Experiment with new channels, formats and media.
- Shift focus from product-centric content to personable storytelling.
- Embrace creativity, humour and new ideas.
These are all worthwhile considerations for creating a more effective and successful B2B marketing approach.

Getting closer to your audiences
Understanding the customer ‘journey’ is not a new concept, but its importance has never been more significant.
B2B marketers must go beyond surface-level understandings and expectations that anyone goes on a linear-journey in 2024. It’s not happening.
It’s high time to truly immerse yourself in your audience’s world for real. This involves actively engaging with existing customers, potential prospects and associated communities, gathering feedback and insights to build strategies based on real-world understanding.
By truly participating in their ‘journey’, businesses can better entertain and delight across all the places that are truly influential in their decision-making.

The crucial role of B2B brand
In the rush to showcase products and services, B2B organisations have often overlooked the vital need for brand (and everything that word encompasses).
Whether B2B organisations want to hear it or not, they simply cannot ignore the pivotal role brand plays in influencing purchasing decisions. Your buyers are not just looking for solutions; they are seeking partnerships with companies that align with their values and aspirations.
Investing in brand development is not just about creating a flashy logo or a catchy tagline. It’s about building memorable associations in your audiences mind that truly resonate on an emotional level.
Ask yourself…
- What does your brand stand for?
- What do we want to be known for in the minds of our customers?
- How do we express that (personality and voice)?
- Who are you in business for?
- How does your product or service benefit them?
- Why you over the competition?
These are just some of the questions that should be answered to create a position and identity that goes beyond the transactional and taps into the emotional and aspirational aspects of the customer.

Exploring (and testing) beyond ‘expected’ channels
Unlike B2C, B2B marketers tend to stick to the tried and tested channels.
While LinkedIn, email marketing, and industry events have proven their worth, moving away from only using these accepted channels could yield improved results.
Experimenting with your channel mix doesn’t mean abandoning the ones that are proving their value to your business, far from it (keep that LinkedIn strategy healthy). Rather it’s about diversifying and exploring new avenues that could add to your current success.
That could be anything from:
- Focussing more on video content, across YouTube and new social platforms.
- Creating or sponsoring podcasts on Spotify
- Launching broad-reaching ATL adverts (connected TV, OOH, Radio), sharing them further on digital channels
- Running activities that encourage Peer-to-Peer Reviews (think TrustPilot, Capterra, G2)
- Empowering your team to replace their current newsletter, with a Substack subscription
- Collaborating with likeminded businesses in forward-thinking brand partnerships
Unconventional channels and unexpected executions provide unique opportunities to test and learn what could work for your business going forward, helping you discover where your audience is most active and receptive.
By embracing an integrated, multi-channel approach, you cast a wider net and possibly win where the competition is invisible.

Rethinking product-focused content marketing
Long gone are the days when a list of product features could capture the attention of B2B buyers (if that time ever really existed). Your modern B2B audience demands a different approach.
They want relatable stories, engaging experiences, purposeful initiatives, and value beyond the brochure. While product information will always have a time and place, it’s the entertaining, humorous, insightful, or practical content that sticks.
So rather than bombarding your audience with technical jargon, B2B marketers should shift towards a more ‘personable’ content strategy. Crafting stories that resonate with who your buyers are at their core. Stories that champion their aspirations and challenges. Stories that make them feel something.

Looking to go further?
The future of B2B marketing belongs to those who can embrace change and deliver value beyond expectations.
Those who place a heightened emphasis on long-term brand building, diverse channels, and content formats, and, most importantly… a deep understanding of what truly influences your audience when they’re in ‘buyer mode’.
